A letter from concerned parents about the upcoming budget...

October 18th, 2009

 To Whom It May Concern:

My name is Marie Correa.  I am a parent, PTA member and serve as a representative on the Elk Grove Unified School District Superintendent’s Advisory Council.

I write to you today regarding the State’s Budget Deficit and the proposed $42 million cut that my home school district faces in the coming school year.  I intend to give parents a voice and remind our elected officials that our children’s education is our top priority.

To aid us in that endeavor, I have founded Support CA Kids (www.supportCAkids.com) through which parents, grandparents, other relatives, co-workers, neighbors and friends can initiate a mail cascade to our state representatives reminding them that the education of children should be our state’s topmost priority.

The website features our mission statement, links to the EGUSD’s budget watch and our State leaders contact information. We are asking individuals belonging to all PTA’s, PTO’s, booster groups and anyone interested in K-12 education to join us in this endeavor for the sake of our children.

Last year, education made up 49% of the state’s budget and suffered 60% of the cuts! As if that weren’t enough, my home district alone is staring down the barrel of an additional $42 million in cuts. Among other things, these cuts will result in the layoffs of teachers, librarians and high school counselors, increased class sizes and drastic reduction in high school athletics.

The time to act is now, before legislators begin to view education as the place where budgets are balanced. I believe that if we work together, we can deliver a far stronger message than if we operate alone in fractured and weakened networks. However, to do this we desperately need your help. As an organization whose identity revolves around our children’s education you are in a unique position to spread the word and help us build a viable presence.

Join us in this ever important grass-roots project and email me at supportCAkids@gmail.com.  Please commit to helping us spread the word to our legislators and force them to make the education of our children their top priority.

Working together, we can Support our Kids!

Sincerely,
Marie Correa
